Buckland is on the East Coast
of Tasmania and is a very small town. Many of the children who go
to our school come from the town of Buckland.
It is very easy to go straight
through and not even notice. Located 63 km north east of Hobart along
the Tasman highway, Buckland is a quiet rural village famous for its St
John the Baptist Anglican Church.

The History of Buckland
In the beginning Buckland
was called Prosser Plains. Buckland was then named after William
Buckland, Dean of Westminster at the time.
After G.M. Parker left Prosser
Plains he saw that the road turned east at Gatehouse Marsh and reached
the seashore. It ran along here to the Prosser River where people
were ferried over by an old whaler named Hedge.
Once Mr Thomas Cruttenden
owned nearly all Buckland. He had a lot of land.
My house is in Cruttenden
St. It used to be one of the old mill houses until we pulled it down
and rebuilt it in 1990.
In Buckland at first used
to be 200 people living there.
About the Church
The wall around the church
was built by Fitzherbert Adams Marriot.
The church at Buckland is
a St John the Babtist church. It was famous for its stained glass
window. It is lit up at night time from the outside.
The History of the Church
Window
The church window came from
England and was made in the 1400’s. It was supposed to go to Buckland
in England, but it came to Buckland in Tasmania.
Buckland Inn History
The pub was built around about
1843 and licensed in 2845. The original bar still exists.
Ian Walker who works at the
pub has just found out that there is a big cellar. (That’s my Dad!)
The pub was built before the
old post office.
