Good Practice Network

Orford Primary School
               Grade 4
Information Technology Project
The Group: The Grade Four students have been chosen to be involved in our Good Practice Project because they are a small group split between two classes.
Time Allocation: The project is time-tabled for three hours per week over three days.   In this time we will be focusing on the following outcomes and competencies in an attempt to observe how using the Internet and Email impact on this group of children.

Problem Solving: We will use a technique called “Future Problem Solving” which outlines precise steps in solving any problem. We will be using the Internet and Email to gather information to inform decision making.

    Information Technology Skills:
The mechanics of computer use will obviously be improved by using information technology in this way.
Information Literacy: We will be developing these skills using the electronic information available to us.  Higher order thinking is essential to our use of the medium.

Social Skills: Co-operative work is a major feature of all the above skills and our relatively low number of computers necessitates students working in pairs or small teams. Focus is on listening and talking to peers in turn,  paraphrasing and disagreeing agreeably.

Getting Started: Initially I have asked students to focus on any problems they perceive their local area as having. Interestingly, they almost unanimously, talked about waste, the local refuse site and litter as something that troubled them.

Students have identified some questions about these issues and we are about to vote on which questions have most interest for them, with a view to pursuing these.
